Day 1 Arrive at Beijing

Arrive at Beijing airport. You will be greeted by our English-speaking tour guide at the airport and transfer to the hotel on a nice private vehicle. Time before dinner is for relax and rest, especially after the long journey with jet lag. If you prefer to walk around, the guide will be happy to assist and offer suggestions upon your request.

Tonight the whole group gathers at hotel lobby and departs for a Peking duck welcome dinner at a local restaurant. The guide will do a brief presentation on some nitty-gritty details on travel in China.

Day 2 Beijing Planning Exhibition Hall, Temple of Heaven Temple of Heaven, Beijing

This morning we visit Beijing Planning Exhibition Hall, for a general picture of Beijing's past and future during the urban development process. The huge model of current Beijing city is the highlight.

After lunch at a local restaurant featuring local cuisine, we transfer to Temple of Heaven, where we see landmark of old-line Beijing - the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvest. As the biggest park in Beijing, Temple of Heaven is also an activity center for the retired, who usually gather within the park doing variety of exercise and entertainments. We may mingle with them and have a glimpse of their leisure life on the way, with a singing of Peking Opera flowing into our ears at times.

Late afternoon we transfer to enjoy a Kongfu show, a first-hand touch with traditional Chinese Martial Arts.

Day 3 Forbidden City Forbidden City, Beijing

After breakfast we take a short drive to Tiananmen Square, the largest public square in the world and the symbolic center for China. At the south end of the Square is the late Chairman Mao's mausoleum, on the east side is the Museum of Chinese Revolution and History, and to the west is the Great Hall of the People.

We take a look at the buildings on the square, then enter Forbidden City from the south gate. We spend the whole morning on a guided tour through this vast and magnificent seat of the emperors' power. Out of the north gate, we head for a lunch at a local restaurant.

We start our hutong tour after lunch. Sitting on Old-Beijing style pedicabs, we have a glimpse of local commoners' life among the narrow hutong valleys, with a stop en route to pay a visit to a local family.

Day 4 Mutianyu Great Wall Mutianyu Great Wall of China, Beijing

This morning, we drive 2 hours to Mutianyu Great Wall, taking cable car up to the Great Wall on the top of the mountain or hike 1,000 steps up. On the Great Wall, we can spend 1-4 hours for hiking around and take toboggan down the hill after our picnic lunch on the Great Wall.

In the afternoon, we visit the Lama Temple and Ancient National Academy if time permits. Lama Temple features a treasury of Buddhist art, including sculptured images of gods, demons and Buddha, as well as Tibetan-style murals.

Tonight, we enjoy the delicious hot-pot dinner at a Mongolian-style restaurant.

Day 5 Beijing to Xi'an, Terra Cotta Warriors Terra Cotta Warriors, Xian, China

We take morning flight to Xi'an. Upon arrival, meet the local guide and directly transfer to Terra Cotta Warriors, the mausoleum of China's first Emperor who started the project not long after ascending the throne at the age of 13 (in 246 BC). It is the most significant archeological excavations of the 20th century. Late afternoon, we visit Xian ancient city wall, which was originally built in Tang Dynasty and extended in Ming Dynasty. It covers 13.7 kilometers (8.5 miles) in length with a deep moat surrounding it.

Day 6 Shaanxi History Museum, fly to Chengdu

This morning we visit Shaanxi History Museum. Since opened in 1991, its architectural buildings, internal apparatus, and exhibits have made it famous as a first-class museum in China.

Early afternoon we fly to Chengdu. Upon arrival, we drive to tour the Wenshu Street, where we have access to all kinds of local handicrafts and snacks. If time permits, we can also some back alleys around there to take a look at how the locals live and work. This evening we have an optional program of Face-changing Show.

Day 7 Panda Breeding Center, Leshan Giant Buhha Panda, Chengdu, China

We get up early this morning to catch the best time to see giant pandas. We arrive at Panda Breeding Center after around 1-hour drive. Opened in 1993, the Center is the world's only thematic museum for rare and endangered animal species. We leisurely walk along the main road with bamboos on each side, watch a short documentary of panda's life, and finally visit the panda's playing grounds, the best place to do photo shooting.

After lunch we drive about 2.5 hours to Leshan for Giant Buddha. Listed into World Heritage Site in 1996 by UNESCO, the Leshan Giant Buddha is a statue of Maitreya in sitting posture. It is located to the east of Leshan City.

Day 8 fly to Guilin

We depart for Chengdu airport after breakfast to catch the noon flight to Guilin. The drive takes around 3 hours. Guilin has been well-known for its picturesque natural beauty. The peculiarly shaped hills, or karsts, with the verdant vegetation ranging from bamboo to conifers together with wonderful caves make Guilin an indispensable element of our classic China tour.

Upon arrival, we meet our local guide and transfer to the hotel. We have a free afternoon to explore the beautiful lake city on our own, savoring the leisure of local people's life. Our guide will be happy to offer tour options for your free time. Dinner is at a local restaurant.

Day 9 Li River Cruise Li River, Guilin, China

This morning we head for the Li River cruise, highly praised as one of the most picturesque landscape of China. The breathtaking Karst scenery takes us away from the bustling world of concrete metropolis - with water buffalo promenading among the fields, peasants reaping rice paddies, school kids and fishermen floating by on bamboo rafts. After the 2.5-hour cruise, we disembark at Xingping old town where we walk around and have lunch at a local restaurant.

After lunch we transfer to Yangshuo, en route stop at a small fishing village where the locals are good at painting and making paper fans. We arrive at Yangshuo in the afternoon. Time before dinner is for free exploration.

This evening we have an optional program - Impression Liu San Jie, an amazing performance directed by Zhang Yimou, at the world largest natural theater which utilizes the waters of the Li River as its stage.

Day 10 Yangshuo to Shanghai via Guilin

With top scenery in Guilin, Yangshuo offers tranquil pastoral views with Yulong River and Li River passing through. Today we leisurely walk or bike around the countryside and take bamboo raft to enjoy the picturesque landscape around Yangshuo. If we like we can also hike 1 hour at Moon Hill, a good exercise rewarded by a wonderful top view of Yangshuo.

This afternoon we drive around 2.5 hours to Guilin and fly to Shanghai.

Day 11 Shanghai

This morning we embark a walking tour around French Concession. Founded in 1862, French Concession is a pleasant mix of wide tree lined streets and interesting European style architecture. The foreign diplomatic quarter, top hotels, great shopping and international restaurants and bars are all found in this area's art deco buildings.

In the afternoon we visit Shanghai Museum, taken as the best in China as a large museum of ancient Chinese art. This evening we drive to the Bund for a short stroll to admire the stunning night view on both sides of the Pu River.

Day 12 Suzhou Gardens

Today we take a half-hour train ride to Suzhou for a day garden tour. Different from the royal gardens in Beijing, the private gardens in Suzhou display a more delicate and integrated style. A microcosm of the world made of the basic elements of water, stones, plants and different kinds of buildings with literary allusions, the classical gardens of Suzhou was listed on list of world heritage in 1997. Suzhou is also famous for its embroidery. We get back to Shanghai in late afternoon.

Tonight we have a farewell dinner.

Day 13 Fly back

Today we transfer to airport to catch the flight back home.
