It's pretty easy. You apply for a single entry visa, which can let you
stay in China for 180 days. Before the 180-day ends, you apply for
extension inside China (local police office). Many people do that for
kids born in US but sent back to grand parents in China

You may also apply for one-year multiple visa, which allows you to
stay in China for up to 90 days (not 30 days, but you need to request
on the applicaiton form). And you go to Hong Kong every 90 days.
